A father-daughter road trip set in 1990s Poland, TREASURE follows Ruth (Dunham), an American music journalist, and her father, Edek (Fry), a charmingly stubborn Holocaust survivor, on a journey to his homeland. While Ruth is eager to make sense of her family's past, Edek embarks on the trip with his own agenda. This emotional, funny culture clash of two New Yorkers exploring post-socialist Poland is a powerful example of how reconnecting with family and the past can be an unexpected treasure.

Critics Consensus

While Stephen Fry and Lena Dunham provide some affecting moments as a father-daughter pair, Treasure's dramatic riches mostly remain buried.

Treasure (2024) | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Brett’s novel was praised for the delicacy with which it balanced the tragic and the ruefully sardonic in its discourse between the generations. In contrast, the film hammers home its every point. Rated: 3/5 Jul 25, 2024 Full Review Treasure (2024) | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Odie Henderson Boston Globe Both leads are horribly miscast. Dunham drags out the same tired, unlikable character she’s been playing her entire career. This film often feels like an episode of “Girls” where Hannah Horvath goes to Lodz. Rated: 1.5/4 Jun 20, 2024 Full Review Treasure (2024) | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Leaf Arbuthnot New Statesman Neither Fry nor Dunham manage to disappear into their roles; and the film never really springs to life, plodding from moment to moment with leaden feet. Jun 17, 2024 Full Review Treasure (2024) | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Tim Miller Cape Cod Wave Magazine Despite the heavy subject matter, you never get entirely pulled into the story; you’re always aware that it’s just a movie, that Dunham and Fry are just playing characters, regardless of whether they’re based on real people. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 17, 2024 Full Review Treasure (2024) | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Abhishek Srivastava The Times of India The attempt to inject comedy into such a serious subject feels misplaced. Rated: 3/5 Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Treasure (2024) | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Nora Lee Mandel Maven's Nest Through all the emotional ups and many downs of this trip through times and crimes, Dunham and Fry nag disagreements about her life and his flirtations, as well as their tears, to make them comfortably seem as if they’ve been together for years. Alan This was a beautiful film. Stephen Frys role was incredible , he deserves an Oscar. I was so touched by this story. I wish I could have done a similar trip with my parents Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/03/24 Full Review Hailey Stunning film. Anyone with a heart must be touched by this beautiful father-daughter relationship. Made me think of my own experience with my dad and our trip back to China. Love Lena Dunham. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Deena Farrow Treasure was a very nice film, old fashioned in the way it was just great film-making. The acting, the story, the setting was all very refreshing. It is a film that makes you laugh and also brings you to tears. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Alison C This is an extremely well-done film about trauma and how it is passed down through generations. Had the protagonists been anything other than Jewish the critics would have loved it.Lena Dunham is the daughter of Polish holocaust (Auschwitz) survivor played by Stephen Fry (who did a great job but I would have been more comfortable with a Polish actor thus distracting from the sometimes missing Polish accent). The film starts out a bit clunky and disjointed but one learns that it is an appropriate framing of the father daughter relationship. We observe their trek to their Polish hometown and the current occupants (set in 1991). While this film is about the horror of the holocaust it is also about how that impacts all aspects of survivors' lives and their children. Excellently done and well worth seeing. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/28/24 Full Review Dalia Lewis Treasure was a truly moving film, I loved the relationship between father and daughter and all the important subjects it explored in a very accessible way. Stephen Fry and Lena Dunham were both terrific. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/30/24 Full Review Irina L Great movie, very thought provoking. Movies like that must be made so one can never forget. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/24/24 Full Review Read all reviews
